Words – with Rupi Kaur
Rupi Kaur’s milk and honey stopped me in my tracks. I couldn’t read at my usual pace without everything in me, and perhaps in the small book itself, screaming and pulling me back to STOP. To slow down, ruminate and consider. Her words are windows into us all – particularly, for me, into the four beings I walk with.
I saw that our local library had a copy of Healing through Words: Guided writing designed by Rupi Kaur to inspire creativity and healing.
As milk and honey had me in a grip, I simply tossed it in my checkout pile one day – no brainer! Now that I see what Healing with Words is, I realize a choice is before me. While easily brushed aside, the shouts milk and honey levied at me are no greater than the quite voice from Healing through Words telling me, “a choice ignored is a choice made.”
I chose to respond and “make-good,” (or at least document trying!), on the opportunity given to me. The opportunity to actively, intentionally, and consistently hear, listen, reflect and respond to the benefit of those around me.
Lot’s of post-COVID, 21st century, “look at me, I’m so self-aware and enlightened,” dross hangs off of my previous statement of choice.
So, here’s the pudding.
Hoping there is proof – in the lives around me.
“You don’t need to be a writer or poet….you just need to write – that’s all” (xvi).
Rupi says:
- Write free-form – no edits; no inhibitions; don’t erase; don’t overthink. Write “until it feels like you’ve said it all” (xii).
- Don’t censor yourself – “give up control.”
Guidance from Rupi
- # 1. “You’re going to do your best … write the first thought that comes to you – don’t edit … or censor yourself. It doesn’t matter if what you write makes sense or not. All that matters is that you give up control…” (xvi).
- # 4. “Don’t skip the breath work … it will help you relax, which in turn will spark creativity” (xvi).
- #5. “You don’t need to be a writer or poet….you just need to write – that’s all” (xvi).
- #12. “Exhale. Let go, and let the words flow,” (xvii).
